sheesh, what a week lol. i've been busy with commissions and should be wrapping up the first round this weekend. thank you so, so, so much to people who have joined the patreon (a surprising amount!), to everyone sharing, discussing and having fun with the comic. i've been returning to an old nsfw comic i had to ditch in 2022 when i collapsed into a pile of bones and cleaning it up with plans to finish it. im...actually juggling projects!! and staying on top of things at home?? its too soon to celebrate but i feel like im crawling out of the hole after so many years. thank you for your support and i hope this comic remains entertaining as it continues to evolve and be very much about characters.

however, i have been really busy with household stuff and just putting my nose to the grindstone with the comic and these projects. so i have no real recommendations. uhh here's some stuff i ate this week???

• gyudon is a really simple and delicious dish. even a dope like me can handle cooking it. you will need ingredients from an asian market but its well worth it. now, here's my ultimate secret: your leftovers will be soupy, but if you remove the meat and onions from the broth and put them on a toasted hamburger bun with chili crisp, you have a killer sandwich. source: ME!!!! oh also i add garlic to the original recipe bc im an oaf and think i can just iterate on ethnic cuisine willy-nilly.
• we had chicken tikka masala this week too. this website is awesome for a lot of indian restaurants, but it also will require a trip to a more specialized asian mart (or a very thoroughly stocked spice store). well worth it, though. sooooo yummy.
• we also had a nice box roux curry this week. for this one you just follow the instruction on the box BUT we make some big changes to it: 1. the last 1/4 of a cup of water should be replaced with wine 2. when you're at the point where you're doing the final 5 minutes of cooking, add chunks of a good red apple (like a cosmic crisp or something). the apple should be crispy still. adds a really nice texture and sweetness to it.

no doodles this week! ive been kicking around the idea of uploading the (pretty large) trove of doodles to a special section of this website for people to go through if they want so its not on ephemeral social media websites. its just going to be a huge undertaking. meanwhile, here's some stuff i can recommend to you:

• logan from earth looks at more dark souls maps looking for interesting trivia or design choices. i like this guy. really mellow to listen to while i work.
• worm girl plays "lily's well", a game made in 2002, that takes place in 2005 and is drawn to emulate the stylings of old atari games. another good one to throw on in the background
• charborg plays a project zomboid mod where his chat votes on a random thing that can affect him.
• face full of eyes discusses the artistic aesthetics of the SWAT-like game "ready or not", with a really in depth criticism of the game from top to bottom: mechanics, weapons, environmental storytelling, the writing, the AI etc. this guy's whole channel is awesome.
• pretzel explores a gmod house. another weird map to explore.
• a short documentary about kim jong-un's older brother, who was famously assassinated under strange circumstances. he sounded like a wild and crazy guy. rip, his posts would have been awesome
• ive been trying to get everyone to listen to this cindy lee album bc its beautiful. give it a listen.

hi! i have some goodies this week. first, a thing i drew that i've been working on forever. i used to make fake movie posters for each completed chapter of a ghost story, but due to "going through it", i never made one for the last chapter...until today. well this actually took me months and many revisions and changes but i think it looks interesting. my hand hurts so bad you have no idea. was it worth it...? no. was this a good investment of my time? also no. but did i accomplish everything i wanted? no. well. at least its done. thanks for looking at it.

• re-read "helck" and "nikaidou hell golf". still really good manga, both of them. i hope nikaidou hell golf keeps getting translated...
• i found a guy on youtube who plays and discusses japan only RPGmaker and atlus games. check out his channel!
• a generational tomato streaming video where he and his friend dave completely break this horror game both by playing it wrong and roleplaying as a couple on the verse of divorce.
• long running webcomic "widdershins" is coming to a close very, very soon. what a good time to catch up!!!!

hi everyone! i have no drawings this week because i went whole hog working on that one illustration ive been working on forever. its like 80% done but the parts that have been challenging me the most are yet to come lol.

no time for recommendations this week! i have a family event happening, but i've been reading manga like crazy and found some really great gems i've been enjoying. but right now i want to really fulfill my ultimate dream of going to bed early lol (impossible?)

no real recommendations this week as i've been primarily indulging in the anime and manga dorohedoro, which has had a lot of ink spilled when it comes to discussion of its quality and unique tone. i really, really enjoyed both. i would now like to catch up on the second season of dorohedoro and then continue the new manga i picked up "the summer hikaru died", which is so good its making me a little envious.

my recommendations are pretty sparse this week since i've been spending most of my time reading books and manga and going through the backlog of frankie's shelf while im working.

• i read a few of dennis cooper's books last week as they're each around 200 pages long. i read "the sluts" (liked it more and more as i marinate on it), "frisk" (which i liked considerably less than "the sluts"), and am in the middle of reading "closer" (which i'm enjoying). these books are not for the faint of heart lol. they are sexually violent, disturbing (even by my jaded standards), explicit, and filled to the brim with unpleasantness. but to me it is a deeply refreshing turn away from the hyper-marketable and saccharine take on gay relationships that has become the bog standard in what feels like basically all forms of media. it is a uniquely unflinching ugliness that's welling up from somewhere very dark that many people would seek to see eliminated rather than explored. i would not recommend these but i am getting something out of reading them.
• for manga, i'm still chewing through "dorohedoro" which has become incredibly confusing and weird 70 chapters in. im not even halfway through and kind of shocked at what's gone down. really interested to see where this could possibly be going. "the lies of the sheriff evans" also has like 5 chapters left before its done. i am never not shocked that the one joke the comic has managed to be stretched out over 240-ish chapters. really fun and breezy read despite the length.

no doodles this week!! sorry about it, i was focused on something a little more complicated and getting through the monthly hormonal onslaught lol. i have a handful of recommendations instead:

• this week i read some totally dogshit manga called "green box" that completely fucking sucked lmfao. it was very, very entertainingly bad. there's a whole genre out there where the protagonist is a thinly veiled attempted by the author to create a sort of under-cooked light yagami clone: amoral, antisocial, and willing to kill untold amounts of people in order to further their goals. all of these protagonists land like a thud because they lack any actual signs of intelligence or cunning behavior because the author also can't conceptualize what a brilliant plan might look like. so instead they're just like stupidly evil while gloating about their brilliance (without any humor or insight as to how stupid the entire situation is).
• i've also been reading the daily uploads of "the lies of the sheriff evans", which is creeping into its final 20 chapters. it just landed a punchline that took like 75% of its 200+ chapter run to set up which was very satisfying. i found it pretty enjoyable. im looking forward to seeing it through to the end.
• i've been reading "dorohedoro" after devouring all there was of "dai dark". both kick insane amounts of ass. im only about 1/4 of the way through dorohedoro though so no spoilers! im wondering how on earth this is going to get stretched out for 150 more chapters.
• miri the cat sleeps and kneads in a pocket
• can you live an average life in skyrim?
• charborg destroys an entire nation in kenshi because they pissed him off

sadly no doodles recently! i got sucked into tomodachi life and fruitless work in other things, so side-doodles didnt really manifest. here's some recommendations!

• you probably already know this, but the anime "witch hat atelier" has 3 episodes out now and it is beautiful. very faithful to the beloved manga, its well worth spending a your time watching if only for the visual feast. the choice to make the illustrations appear as pop-up books in the anime is pretty inspired.
• i made a soup recipe
• i wrote a recommendation for another anime that just started airing: "kujima: why sing when you can warble?"
• ronununu has released another strange silent hill f animation. i love these so much.
• i wrote a recommendation for a really incredible japanese webcomic "paperaQ". please read this. its so good.

• lately i've been really into "frankie's shelf", which reviews primarily thrillers and paperback fiction. very entertaining.

i had a busy week i guess. im also working on a print that's not a print. it will be available for patreon donors to download and do as they please with it when its done i think. still figuring out what to do with this stuff i've started making lol

no doodle this week related to the comic! i'm getting a commission done and working on something more complicated. then im going to try to get a handle on the backlog of stuff i need to work on. for real this time! i feel like im finally approaching the ability to start doing that again. here's my weekly recommendations:

for manga, i've been reading:

• "let's go karaoke!" and "let's go familyres!" by yama wayama, whose work "the star of girl's garden" i enjoy very, very much. "let's go karaoke!" and its sequel revolve around a reserved middle school (and later college) student who is kidnapped by a yakuza for after school singing lessons. if the yakuza loses the annual family karaoke contest, he will be forced to get a bad tattoo by the boss lol. the yakuza is friendly, but annoying while the middle schooler is, rightfully, terrified. very funny and understated work.
• i also read "Kujima Utaeba Ie Hororo", which is about a giant weird bird-man thing from russia that moves in with a family in japan for the winter. he wants to eat japanese food. everyone just sort of accepts the situation quickly and doesn't question it too much. very sweet and pretty funny. 
• lastly, ive been blazing through "the lies of the sheriff evans", which is a manga with a single joke (sheriff evans became a sheriff in the old west to get popular with women, and always fails) that has somehow not managed to run it into the ground after 100 of the 200 chapters ive read. who knows what the next 100 chapters hold but i have a feeling i know what it is lol. surprisingly funny considering the limits imposed by the simple premise.

in other things to read and watch:

• this lady in rhode island is being sued because she was feeding turkey vultures in her backyard by throwing whole chickens out there and attracting a shit ton of rats
• ive been watching dungeon chill's videos as i work on things. here's one about a weird vampire game that was only released in japan for the ps1. very well made videos about relatively niche video games that usually did not get ported over to the west. the one about sweet home was also very interesting, especially in how it relates to the movie it was based on.
• charborg and criken are vampires in the sims, badly.
• buffalo chicken wings for the chinese palate 
• dark souls 2 poop only run

unfortunately spent a lot of this week lying on the couch going "oooerrggg orrrrggg" but i started a little side drawing for fun and worked on my stupid, never-ending bloodborne project thing. here's some things i watched/read this week!

• i played the tomodachi life demo and am unfortunately looking forward to playing it when it comes out. im kind of a sucker for the stupid shit tomodachi life allows you to indulge in. i think it will be fun to make my little comic freaks come alive in that game.
• tokyo tv has been uploading official subtitled episodes of "the solitary gourmet", which was originally a great manga about a salary man who is kind of a misanthrope. he eats food and enjoys his solo life. very simple premise and execution. the tv show is a delightful take on the premise. great for if you just like seeing good food.
• the only true crime youtuber worth watching, matt orchard, released another video demonstrating how circumstantial evidence can be used to win trials.
• triple canopy, an arts magazine, released an article entitled "black block": â€œDo we think that being truly critical of a black artist’s work would be, in some way, racist?” An essay on the false choice between boosterism and marginalization, and the assumptions that keep critics from seeing clearly". a really fascinating overview of a complicated problem in arts.
• red letter media asks: what are these movies?! 
• a previously discussed artist, salmonrowe, released a zine about their sweet little cat on their patreon :)
• uni the cat turned 6 years old!
• i made a post about what i consider to be "influential webcomics" on tumblr!

uhhh things i watched/read are kind of limited this week! i need to do a better job of writing them down so i don't forget.

• the ringo award nominations are up for grabs. i highly suggest reading and nominating the ever excellent webcomic "rigby, WI", which is one of my currently running comics right now!
• i remembered that there was a sequel to the excellent manga "thermae romae" today and read what there is available to read right now. it's still great. its about an ancient roman bathhouse architect who slips through time to modern day japan semi-frequently to get new ideas for his bathhouses from onsens lol. one of the most recent chapters had him witness capybaras sitting in a hot spring. great stuff.
• i watched charborg play kenshi. he repeatedly tricked the AI into enslaving itself lol.
• i learned about "pillars of eternity" from warlockcracy. kinda want to play it now. if you like CRPGs he's worth checking out for an interesting way of discussing this genre of games for turbo nerds.

oh right...i did draw something this week lol.

• i watched many of logan from earth's gmod exploration videos this week and learned a lot about what people are doing in that strange and oft overlooked creative field. very interesting stuff out there.
• mandalore reviews "the sinking city", a game i had completely forgotted about until he covered it. and my first reaction was "oh right! this buggy mess" lol.
• here's a thread highlighting funny moments from my re-read of "one day outing foreman", which i love so much. everyone should read it lol
• surprisingly funny ASMR guy i found lol. you know how it is, looking up asmr on youtube looking for weird gems. this is def one.
• my friend's webcomic "doomsday, my dear" is at its VERY DRAMATIC climax!!!! i've said this before but this is one of the comics that got me into reading webcomics. 100% worth the read!!
